Ron Hatfield on the Vision Behind The Ledges at Espiritu

It’s an exciting time for Del Mar Development, which is celebrating its 20th Anniversary year with the launch of The Ledges, a distinctively new luxury residential offering in Espiritu. The Ledges features a limited collection of Residences and Penthouses perched high above Palmilla Bay with dramatic views of the Sea of Cortez and the city lights of San Jose del Cabo. Each residence presents the latest in modern luxury home design from Del Mar Development, which, for two decades, has set the standard in Los Cabos for exceptional design, quality construction, impeccable service and effortless lifestyle.

We spoke with Del Mar Development President Ron Hatfield to learn more about the vision behind The Ledges and the effortless lifestyle that comes with ownership.

The Ledges is the first residential offering of its kind from Del Mar Development. Why is the timing right?

Homeowners and prospects have been asking us for a product like this, and we were searching for the ideal location. As we continued land planning and development in Espiritu, we found it. The Ledges is built into the side of a beautiful desert mountain with sweeping, unobstructed ocean views of Palmilla Bay and the twinkling lights of San Jose.

You’ve taken a more contemporary approach with these residences. Tell us about the design concept behind The Ledges?

Though our more traditional Mexican homes are still extremely popular, the trend amongst our buyers has led us in a more contemporary direction. We’re getting away from curves and arches and incorporating more angular square openings and columns. We’re using less decorative tile, different flooring and natural stone slabs. That said, the design of an individual home can be customized to fit personal tastes and lifestyle, ranging from a more traditional aesthetic to a contemporary one, or a transitional style that marries the two.

What was some of your inspiration?

We drew a lot of our inspiration from contemporary homes in the cities and coastal towns of Mexico. There is a wonderful history of contemporary architecture in Mexico, and the style is increasingly modern.

In Cabo, the lifestyle is all about outdoor living. How do these residences embody that?

Each residence will reflect our signature indoor/outdoor living experience, with seamless continuity between the two. With only four residences and one penthouse per building, each residence is a corner home, with a generous, private terrace allowing for spacious outdoor living. Each terrace will have ample dining and lounging space, as well as a private terrace pool.

The Penthouses are truly special, offering more than 7,500-square feet of indoor and outdoor living. What was the vision behind these homes?

We pulled out all the stops to make the Penthouses unlike any other product in Cabo. Each Penthouse occupies the entire top floor of its building and features five bedroom suites, 16-foot ceilings and large terrace pools. Both the Penthouses and the Residences will have commanding ocean views, and the sea breezes that circulate throughout the homes will be unbeatable. We have also put together an extremely high level of finishings and top-of-the-line appliances never before seen in Los Cabos.

The Ledges will feature Del Mar Development’s signature quality and craftsmanship. What features do you think most set Del Mar Development apart?

We design homes to fit the lifestyle of our buyers, and how they want to live in their homes. Certainly the quality of design and construction of the homes are our hallmarks, but I think what separates us most is the level of detail that goes into the design of our interiors. The volumes, ceiling heights, window heights, how the rooms feel, how people will live in the space. That is where we focus our attention, and I’m prouder of that more than anything. A Del Mar home simply feels good to come home to. Homes are proportioned properly; they make sense. That’s what gives them the desirability.

What is it about The Ledges that really stands out to you?

The views, location and service. How the homes are sited to offer dramatic views overlooking Palmilla Bay and San Jose. The sleek, modern design is an exciting new direction for us. But it’s really the services and amenities that distinguish The Ledges. In addition to our Del Mar Management services, the Club Ninety Six beach club and Club Espiritu fitness club, The Ledges will have its own on-site resort services and amenities.

Tell us about the lifestyle experience offered at The Ledges.

We’ve put a lot of thought into the amenities and services and wanted to offer something new and different. Services that are typically “a la carte” will be included in the monthly management dues, like private airport transportation. Pool concierges will offer food and beverage service by the resort pools, and each residence will have a dedicated, private poolside cabana. On the entry level, a temperature controlled cava will allow homeowners to store their personal wine collections. Even the parking garage will have beautiful flooring, lighting design and ample storage. All of these offerings were inspired by our homeowners, from listening to what they were asking for over the last two decades.

What would you say has most changed in the design and building techniques since Del Mar Development started building in Los Cabos in 1995?

We’re in a very different place today than we were when we started 20 years ago. Our buyers are younger. Our homes have become larger and more multi-generational to accommodate growing families. We’re incorporating higher-end design and finishes. Entertaining and outdoor living spaces are larger. We have many requests for single story homes, with no steps. The Ledges are a response to this.

Del Mar Development is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. That must be a huge milestone for you personally and professionally. To what do you attribute your success?

We set out to build a world-class residential community, and we didn’t spare any expense in the planning and development. It’s been the passion and dedication of not only the development company, but all the Del Mar Management employees who have worked together to contribute to our success.

You’re originally from Houston, but have been living here for 20 years. I guess you could say Cabo is an easy place to get to, but a hard place to leave? What keeps you here?

The ease of living. The weather is fantastic, the people are wonderful, it still has a small town feel, you’re minutes away from everything and you have all the modern conveniences of home. You’re two hours from Houston, Dallas, LA, San Diego, with tremendous air service. You can fly in and out with ease whenever you need to. It’s hard to go back to everyday life after Los Cabos.

After 20 years in Mexico, you’ve had to have become quite a tequila connoisseur. What’s your tequila of choice?

It has always been Don Julio 1942. On the rocks – no salt, no lime.

Favorite places to enjoy your tequila?

The new, hotspot in town is La Osteria. It has great food, great music and a great atmosphere. Our own Club Ninety Six beach club of course, and the new restaurants next door at the One&Only Palmilla are fantastic. One of my favorites is still the Cabo Surf Hotel, a great spot with great views.
