The 3rd Annual Gala de Danza A Tremendous Success

Showcasing Beautiful Artistry in an Extraordinary Place

Gala de Danza celebrated its third year bringing together artists from around the world to help enrich the thriving arts culture of the Los Cabos community and the lives of its young dancers. Dancers, choreographers and musicians from ten different countries graced the stage at the Pabellón Cultural de la Republica theatre in Cabo San Lucas for a special two-day engagement in June. Once again, Del Mar Development was a proud presenting sponsor of the international event.

The program was a mix of classical ballet, contemporary dance and Latin ballroom. Dancers hailed from companies such as the Mariinsky Ballet from St. Petersburg, New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Joffrey Ballet, Ballet West and were joined by astounding youth and International Latin Champions.

The visionary behind the Gala de Danza is Del Mar homeowner and Gala Founder Christina Lyon, formerly of American Ballet Theatre and the English National Ballet. Lyon co-produces the Gala in collaboration with Lourdes Téllez of Danza Téllez, Los Cabos’ premier ballet school. The Gala has grown tremendously over the last three years with more choreographers, dancers and musicians involved.

“We found a niche in the market here in Los Cabos and eventually, I hope to develop the Gala into a festival of music and dance,” says Lyon.

“It is such an honor for us to be part of this event and to encourage the burgeoning arts community here in Los Cabos,” says Ron Hatfield, President of Del Mar Development, which has been a presenting sponsor of the Gala for the last three years. “Every year, the Gala brings an energy and excitement to Los Cabos that is truly inspiring.”

The night opened with 22 men from Escuela Superior de Música y Danza de Monterrey performing “Legions,” a piece that won them a silver medal at the 2014 Youth America Grand Prix Finals in New York. Some of the highlights included a brilliant piece created by world renowned choreographer Josie Walsh called “Dreams”, performed with live music by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Legend and Grammy Award winner Sammy Hagar.

The Gala featured the triumphant return for Los Cabos’ own Mariana Carrillo and Andres Zuñiga, both former students of Danza Téllez. Carrillo is continuing her professional career, and Zuñiga is currently studying at School of American Ballet in New York.

Del Mar’s private beach club, Club Ninety Six, was again the location of the post-Gala party where the dancers and event organizers gathered to celebrate, dine on delicious cuisine and dance the night away by the sea.

The Gala has become the cultural event of the year in Los Cabos. Mark your calendars now for next year’s performances June 3–5, 2016.
